BJP makes Mumbai terror a poll issue in J&K

Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now harping on the terror attacks in Mumbai to seek votes in the Hindu-dominated Jammu region, pushing all local issues to the backburner.

"The Congress cannot protect you. They could not save innocent lives in Mumbai, how can they make your future secure here," thundered Nirmal Singh, party's former State unit president and contestant from Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency at a rally in Jammu.

He faces a stiff competition from Congress nominee Raman Bhalla, a sitting legislator. The BJP is attacking the Congress all the way, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which it had been blaming for the Amarnath land row crisis is not being touched.

The Congress and the BJP are the two main parties in the contest. Both are contesting all the 37 seats in the Jammu region. The Congress had won 15 seats in the previous Assembly polls in 2002 and the BJP had won one. Rest were won by National Conference (9), Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (four) and eight independents, some of whom joined the Congress and the PDP later.

The BJP has brought the Mumbai terror strikes in its discourse because its leaders feel the TV images of the firing, grenade explosions and the bodies in the luxury hotels has left an imprint on the minds of the people. "There is an element of fear among the people and they need a party that can reassure them of a fearless environment and that's our party," said BJP State unit president Ashok Khajuria.

The anger against the Congress leadership at the centre and Maharashtra in the wake of the terror attacks is being exploited by the BJP by presenting itself as a party tough on terrorism.

"Nothing of this sort happened during our regime," said former minister of state of defence Chaman Lal Gupta, who is a candidate from the Jammu West constituency. He is fighting against former deputy chief minister and senior Congress leader Mangat Ram Sharma.

But the people are not amused by the BJP's appeal in the name of fighting terrorism. "They were equally bad when they were in power. They were spineless as Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the worst massacres during their time," recalled Shiban Krishan Bhat, a migrant.

"All that the politicians are interested in is power," quipped Vinay Gupta. "It doesn't behove anyone of them to claim that they fought terror and others did not," he said.

LeT in forefront of jihadi operations in J&K

Chandigarh, December 1, 2008: 'LeT behind jihadi operations in J&K'Despite the elimination of its several key operators in Jammu and Kashmir during last 11 months, the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba ( LeT) retains its stealth and striking capability in the troubled state and beyond, according to top security officials.

"Lashkar remains in the forefront of major terror actions in Jammu and Kashmir" the state Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda told India Today on Monday.

Investigators have found the Lashkar finger prints on the unprecedented Mumbai terror attack.

As one of the long-active terrorist outfits active in the Kashmir Valley, LeT has been known to be terror wing of the Jamaat-ud-Dawah, a fundamentalist organisation based at Muridke, 30 km from Lahore in Punjab province of Pakistan.

Headed by Hafiz Sayeed, an engineer-turned-fiery fundamentalist known for his vocal commitment to the concept of jihad against India beyond Kashmir, Jamaat-ud-Dawah has been portraying itself as an Islamic charity organisation - a ploy to dodge the American pressure after the US put the LeT in the list of terrorist organisations a few years ago.

"In reality, the Jamaat-ud-Dawah is a factory for producing terrorists for suicidal attacks against the Indian targets" says Khoda, drawing on his experience of interrogating the captured LeT operatives during their 'fidayeen ' (suicidal) attacks in Kashmir Valley.

Khoda said the common factor that invariably emerged in the interrogation of LeT terrorists was the involvement and inspiration of the Pakistan establishment in terror actions in J&K. "Even the recent trends in infiltration clearly show that it was in the knowledge of the Pakistan security agencies" said the DGP.

J&K approaches centre for coal allocation

It is reported that Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation is approaching the centre for allocating coal blocks for setting up of a thermal power plant to meet the growing energy requirements. This was stated at a meeting of the Board of Directors of Power Development Corporation, presided over by Mr NN Vohra Governor.

The meeting was informed that the State of Jammu and Kashmir required base load power of about 2000 MW, as the power generation plummets drastically during the winter while the demand shoots up.

Being a non cal bearing State, sufficient allocation of coal would be required for the proposed thermal plant. Vohra called for making all the power houses operational to their full capacities in view of the power shortage in the State.

The Board added that the third unit of the Baglihar Hydro Electric Project-I is under trial run and with the running of all the 3 units of 150 MW capacity each, the power generation will improve subject to availability of water in River Chenab.
