Inflation 7.61 pc; more steps likely to check it

New Delhi, May 9: Inflation crept up to a nearly four-year high of 7.61 per cent, impelling the government to think of more administrative measures to keep prices down such as goading cement manufacturers to cut rates.
"More administrative steps will be taken as and when necessary," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said on Friday, as inflation rose to a 42-month high in the week ended April 26 on costlier tea, spices, fruits, vegetables and some manufactured products.

Bhajji`s fate hangs in balance; Nanavati to submit report on Monday

Ahmedabad, May 09: The hearing in the Sreesanth-Bhajji slapgate row concluded here on Friday. The hearing went on for around 60 minutes during which time both the players were subject to several questions on what transpired on the day. The report will be forwarded to BCCI President Sharad Pawar on Monday.
Both the players were reportedly satisfied with the hearing, which took place in the presence of BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah.
Refusing to comment on the report, Shah said, "It is a serious report. It will go to the President and the discipine committee before deciding on the further course of action.

China willing to engage on Tibet -Dalai Lama envoy 
Dharamshala, May 08: An envoy to the Dalai Lama said on Thursday Chinese negotiators had shown a willingness to engage with the Tibetan side during recent talks, despite major differences on important issues.
"There were strong and divergent views on the nature as well as the causes of the recent tragic events in Tibet," the envoy, Lodi Gyari, said in a statement issued in Dharamsala, home of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
"These views were expressed in a frank and candid manner."
Each side exchanged "concrete proposals which can be part of a future agenda", Lodi Gyari said, adding that the next meeting should not be delayed.
"We will only announce the date after we have discussed with our counterparts and both sides have agreed," he said.

Karunanidhi's son acquitted in murder case

Chittoor, May 08, 2008: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's son MK Azhagiri, was acquitted on Thursday along with 12 others by a sessions court in Chittoor in a case relating to the murder of a former DMK minister for want of reliable evidence.
Sessions Judge P Durga Prasad in a brief verdict observed that there was no reliable evidence to connect the accused with the murder of former minister T Kiruttinan. The judge said the detailed judgment would be pronounced on Friday.
Azhagiri, along with the other accused, was present in the court when the judgment was delivered amidst tight security.
A large contingent of DMK workers, who were present in the court, raised slogans in support of Azhagiri and Karunanidhi.
