From fading black-and-white to bright colour, new version of 'Mughal-e-Azam'

Mumbai:K Asif's everlasting, evergreen classic - the songs, the sets, the stars, the name of the film itself came to stand as a landmark in cinematic history in the country.

Mughal-e-Azam released in 1960, known for its grand sets, was among the first movies in Indian cinema that saw colour as opposed to black-and-white, though only in parts. Reflecting the Mughal era with a strong storyline, the film's brilliance lay in its very scale.

The technical evolution at Bollywood today has made possible refinements there too - to picture quality, complete colouration, and sound improvements.

The inherent strength of everlasting appeal would remain bright, as it has down the decades. Giving Mughal-e-Azam a new coloured avatar was taken up by a production house Sterling Investment Corporation in Mumbai. An 800,000 dollar project. Quite a sum when you consider that the original was made for a little last that 280,000 all inclusive.

Besides inserting colour into every frame, conversion of the rough mono-sound throughout the film into Dolby stereo for an all-round modern get-up was an important challenge. The old track was cleaned on the lines of renewal of some Hollywood classics. And the entire musical score virtually re-recorded on Dolby digital.

The biggest victory though, was that the entire process was carried out indigenously, showing India is ready to move on to more.

Reviving old links. Naushad, who had directed the music for the original 1960 classic takes another bow, as Mughal-e-Azam reaches new generations with the same magical appeal.

You don't see such things anywhere. Its a reliving experience of a lifetime.

The original Mughal-e-Azam was one of the most expensive films of its time, charting new records in the field. Half-a-century on, costs have escalated manifold - only natural with the technical advancements and precision Bollywood has achieved.

In the film itself though, the content and storyline, the lessons and aura exudes magical brilliance even now.
